Statement Regarding Recent Surfer Death

National Geographic Channel shares our sincere condolences to the family of the surfer killed today off the coast of South Africa. While it is true we do have a series currently airing on the channel called Shark Men with Chris Fischer, we have not renewed the series for another season, have no plans to renew, and are not filming new episodes at this time. Therefore, the filming we understand was taking place in South Africa related to this incident was NOT for National Geographic Channel, for future episodes of Shark Men or any other National Geographic production.

For more information on the tragic incident, read this recent article from the Washington Post.

I was wondering why the National Geographic Channel did not renew the series Shark Men for another season? I really enjoy this show so I am a bit bummed to hear this. If there is any info you could relay to me about this decision I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

I am a bit upset as well that this series has been canceled. It was great to watch a series that was actually gathering useful scientific data and documenting it for all to enjoy. Also, it’s very disappointing that shows like “wicked tuna” are aired showing the killing off of a species with no educational purpose of the show. Shark Men was one of the best series and it’s sad that Nat Geo see’s no use in taping more seasons. I’m a surfer and sharks are something that is part of our sport.. ESPECIALLY in AFRICA!
