The Seven Year Bark

blog post photo

Name: Astro

Breed: Australian Red Cattle Dog

Age: 7 years old

Astro’s father was in a famous Australian beer commercial where the dog stole beer out of a cooler.  Astro was only about 7 weeks old when he came to owner Alison Clark, but she hoped he would have the same star quality.

Instead she learned that she had been cast in the “seven year bark.”  Astro barks incessantly at the oddest of activities.  When Alison makes the bed, Astro barks, twirls, and tries to bite the sheets.  When she mounts her exercise bike, Astro stands in front of it and barks until she gets off.  If she gets the vacuum out of the cupboard, if she carries anything in the house, or when she gets the garden shears out, Astro follows Alison… barking and barking and barking.

Alison Clark works as executive assistant with a property management company that maintains traffic lights in Sydney.
Alison also has another Australian Cattle Dog named George.

Alison shocked Cesar and the
Dog Whisperer crew when she showed them a photo of the large python that snuck into her rural home near Brisbane.

Don’t miss Astro in the all-new episode of the Dog Whisperer, “Cesar in Oz,” this Friday 9P et/pt!

Hi my name is Sarah. We recently got a puppy. He is 3/4 part mini pincher 1/4 chihuahua. When we got him about 1 1/2 weeks to 2 weeks ago, we were told he was very quiet and was 3 months old. We have since found out that he is 5 months old and loves to growl and bark. He has a few scars on him from when his mom supposedly bit him or got in fight with him.He will bark for no reason at my husband no matter if he is going outside, coming home from work, or getting more comfortable in his recliner. Any move he makes Jack( the puppy) barks and acts like he is going to attack him.Jack does go up to Dennis(my husband)but he stop a feet or two away from him. My older daughter( who is 20) however he will run up barking and actually act like he is going to attack her, then jumps on her , sometimes being nice and other times scaring her,Anytime someone comes in the room he barks and acts like hes going to attack them.Hes really sweet when hes not like this. Dennis wants us to get rid of him.Jack is a birthday present for my other daughter who is 18 now.Dennis is a very impatient person. He wont wait very long for us to train him.Is there anything we can do?Please email Thank you for any help you can give us,Sarah Pierce

Usually getting to the source of the problem is the key. We had a similar issue with our dog, but probably not as extreme. It does take patience and involving an expert to get results. You need to get your husband on board too as it wil take a massive joint effort.

We just bought a new dog 2 months ago.I got a learning course and applied it with the dog ,which was working well……but only for me,i later learned. Our dog would only listen to me and no one else,he would just ignore the kids and my wife. So,we soon learned that it has to be a collective family effort or whoever is living with the dog to train a dog properly. Now we have a brilliant happy house with our dog.
