Ittoqqortoormiit is a tiny town in in Eastern Greenland. It’s not just a tiny town though – it’s the smallest town in the country. Formerly known as Scoresbysund, Ittoqqortoormiit only has about 450 inhabitants. The closest human presence to this little town is the Danish Sirius Patrol, who work at the border protecting the Northeast Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world.
The vast wildlife also makes this town unique. Narwhals, walruses, seals and polar bears all reside in Ittoqqortoormiit. Although the town is mostly desolate, it does become a popular cruise destination a few months of the year. Small vessels exploring the nature, wildlife, and culture of the region regard Ittoqqortoormiit an important spot.
Another reason this region is popular among tourists is the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights. It’s a natural phenomenon that occurs all year round. It cannot be seen during the summer months, but it still happens. The phenomenon is best seen in the middle of the night, around midnight. If one ever visits the area, this beautiful sight is one that shouldn’t be missed.
