Finalists Announced for the Second Annual WILD TO INSPIRE Short Film Competition

We are excited to announce with our partners from Sun Valley Film Festival and the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) the finalists from the second annual WILD TO INSPIRE short film competition.  Join us in congratulating Filipe DeAndrade for “Adapt”, Alex Goetz for “Living Isle”, Jake Lamons for “Northern”, and Austin Haeberle and Wendy Jacques for “Not on Our Watch: Keeping the Congo’s Gorillas From Extinction”.

Earlier this year, we asked aspiring filmmakers to submit a short film showcasing their own version of Destination Wild. Full of awe-inspiring scenery and wildlife, Nat Geo WILD’s Destination Wild specials feature the best, most innovative wildlife storytelling from some of the greatest filmmakers in the world.  Finalists were selected based on wildlife stories and moments from their own lives, whether on their travels or in their own backyards.

We were truly inspired by these films and look forward to the Sun Valley Film Festival (March 4-8), where each of these filmmakers will screen their shorts for a panel of judges, to determine which will travel to Africa later this year to share their wildlife adventure with Nat Geo WILD viewers.

Take a look and let us know – which would you vote for?

I wouldn’t vote for any of them. I thought there were much better submissions than the ones you chose.

As an anthropology major and lover of culture, I was moved by the stories in Living Isle and Not on our watch. But when I watched Adapt and listened to his pure love for what he was doing, I got goosebumps. I was inspired- inspired to be a little more wild. I wanted to be on top of that windy mountain, screaming at the top of my lungs, witnessing and experiencing the beauty that Mother Nature bestows upon us mere mortals; and adapting to the chaos She brings as well.

Filipe, Chani sent this to me, and I am speechless and in tears from watching, as your work is beyond amazing! The night sky reminds me of Brian’s shots too. Congratulations!

“Northern” is proof that you don’t need exotic locales to put together an awe-inspiring video; the appreciation for nature in its purest form is obvious through the filmmaker’s eyes. In addition to its astonishing depiction of Northern Michigan, the creative use of a voiceover lends itself to larger understandings of desire, appreciation, and ambition. Of all the videos, this is the one that most inspired me to be creative, proactive, and involved.
All of the films are inspiring and well done – a lot of talent and innovation in these selections!

Funny – some of these “finalists” were submitted after the posted deadline. Guess rules don’t count if you just decide to make them up yourselves….
