This week, we’ll explore the kinder, gentler, less painful side of Science of Stupid. Now, that doesn’t mean there won’t be ANY suffering at the hands of scientific ignorance. There will be plenty of that; don’t you worry. A GIF recap of SOS just wouldn’t be the same without it. Are you ready?

Seth's ready

Seth’s ready

Let’s get to the fun.

5) Swing low, sweet idiot

Probably should have checked the weight limit

Probably should have checked the weight limit

PAIN SCORE: 1 belly laugh

IMPACT POINTS: butt, self-esteem

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING: Look, swinging can go wrong in lots of ways.  (See below.) But this guy… well, he’s just too much man for that rusty old play set. It simply can’t support his weight.

HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE:

Almost took his friend down with him

Almost took his friend down with him

The human butt has more padding than the face. That’s science.

DID YOU KNOW: The average max weight for similar swing sets is around 100lbs per seat. You probably weight more than that yourself, so stay off metal swing sets, human adult.

4) The 2014 Twirled Cup

If your shirt says "boobs," you need to go change

If your shirt says “boobs,” you need to go change

PAIN SCORE: 2 big dumb grins

IMPACT POINTS: butt, buzz

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING: Dizziness, duh. This lunkhead thought it would be a good idea to spin himself silly, then try to kick a stationary object. Spinning in a circle effects the body’s sensitive balance mechanism drastically. There are ways to combat such dizziness with a lot of practice.  Like “years of ballet training” practice. But for most people, it’s just unfocused eyesight, choppy waters in the inner ear, and tons of muscle misfires.

HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE:

“I used to take ballet!” was uttered sometime before this

“I used to take ballet!” was uttered sometime before this

Our girl here actually has the right idea. She’s using her eyes to stare at a fixed point, which can help alleviate some of the dizziness. She also made the poor decision to try this inside near hard edges.

DID YOU KNOW: An estimated 35% of American adults over 40 experience problems with their balance system. So take the camera next time you see grandma!

3) Actually, this looks pretty fun

Weeeeeeeeee!

Weeeeeeeeee!

PAIN SCORE: 4 cool guy smirks

IMPACT POINTS: Butt, overall score

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING: Long jumping requires a top speed of around 20mph and impeccable timing on the take off. It also helps to avoid any wet spots, patches of ice, or banana peels that might be on the track for some reason. Like I said: “weeeeeeeeee!”

HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE:

Call the pool guy. That is the pool guy? Fire the pool guy.

Call the pool guy. That is the pool guy? Fire the pool guy.

The athlete was smart enough to blow it in a controlled environment. The pool guy, on the other hand, well who needs a tailbone anyway?

2) Ski + kid = skid

Such is the fate of many an 80s teen movie villain

Such is the fate of many an 80s teen movie villain

PAIN SCORE: 6 nervous giggles while holding back tears

IMPACT POINTS: Face and facial features

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING: In order to properly land a ski jump, one must maintain his or her momentum. When the kid seen above hits the obstacle he’s meant to clear, well, that sorta ruins that plan. Those nice safe bindings made sure he didn’t tear his legs in half by keeping the skis on his feet, which is good. It just meant the only thing he had to land on at that point was his feet and face.

HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE:

Frankly, this is probably in his near future

Frankly, this is probably in his near future

He could have tried the big boy hill.

DID YOU KNOW: The world record ski jump is over 809ft. That’s the same height the MetLife Building in New York!

1) Skewering the competition

And he never ate a popsicle again

And he never ate a popsicle again

PAIN SCORE: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

IMPACT POINTS: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING: MAKE IT STOP!

HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE: IMPOSSIBLE!

DID YOU KNOW: DON’T EVER POLE VAULT!

It goes without saying, but don’t try any of this stuff at home. It will hurt so so much. But do try to catch Science of Stupid – Fridays on Nat Geo!

I find the show entertaining and interesting, however, I find the host to be dense, monotone and boring, even thou he thinks he is funny.

I like your show “Science of Stupid” but your host is the stupidest person on the show (he is NOT funny). I’m a retired engineer and enjoy the combination of using science correctly and incorrectly. Drop him and I will continue to view, don’t and I will find something else to entertain myself.
