Could They Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?

This week’s The Numbers Game focuses on the question Could You Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?  Some people are incredibly well-prepared, like the Doomsday Preppers in the episode, and others aren’t quite so ready.  If you are part of that second group, you could learn a lot tonight, and maybe even learn how to survive in the case of any major emergency, not just those having to do with the undead.  Summer internships are a state of emergency for many college students, so I decided to ask around and see whether National Geographic Channel interns think they would survive and how.  Some of them had full battle plans, others were born with the skills, and a couple were not so sure about their survival. Alex Korba, Survival Status: Born Ready

“I’m from Texas… I’d be fine.”

Josh Strupp, Survival Status: Other?

“What would I do during a zombie apocalypse? Well, as I always say, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. I’d be bitten purposely and become king of the zombies.” “Is it technically ‘surviving’ if I’m the walking dead… seems sort of paradoxical.”

Taylor Kinzler, Survival Status: Short Term Stocked

“I would create an underground bunker and stock it with maps, flashlights, canned food, water, blankets and clothing for cold and warm weather. I would also stock it with guns, amo, and other weapons needed to protect myself.” “I think I would survive for a few months but I don’t think I’m equipped to deal with extreme survival tactics like that needed in a zombie apocalypse.”

Dilini De Silva, Survival Status: At Sea

“In the event of a zombie apocalypse, I would get on the nearest ship, sail it to the middle of the ocean, and hide there until the zombie apocalypse was over. I think I’d survive, as long as none snuck onto the ship!”

Claire Jones, Survival Status: BBs and Bites

“[I’d] collectively stick with my three younger brothers and follow their lead. We have a significant stash of BB/nerf guns and they have inevitably mapped out an escape route into the woods. We could probably live out there for a while in the trees.” “In all honesty I’d love to say I would have a “Shaun of the Dead” moment and survive a zombie apocalypse… however, I am rather klutzy and would probably trip over one and get bitten by another.”

Kate McCormick, Survival Status: Sneaky Survival

“I would disguise myself and pretend to be one of them, so yeah I’d definitely survive.”

Vanina Harel, Survival Status: Untraceable

“I would definitely survive a zombie apocalypse. I would simply fly or take a ship back to my country, Mauritius, and the zombies would not even know where it is! They could try and track me down at NatGeo, but my island has been known to disappear from maps…”

Caroline Clark, Survival Status: Death by Tickles

“Unfortunately, I would not survive a zombie apocalypse. Growing up with two older brothers, I’ve found the best way to lessen the length and severity of an attack is by collapsing to the ground and curling up into a ball. Essentially, I play dead. After a significant number of trials over the span of 20+ years, I have found that this confuses the attacker and takes the fun out of their assault. Even though playing dead is probably the only reason why I’m here telling you this today, I cannot expect this to work against a force of vicious, meat-seeking zombies. I’d probably be dead in an instant.”

Does the future of National Geographic Channel look bright with this batch of survivalists moving in?  Some of us, including my survival-inept self, could probably benefit from tuning in tonight at 9:30 on NatGeo to watch Could You Survive a Zombie Apocalypse? Want to see if you’d survive?  Play along with this zombie outbreak simulator and see how you do!
