Last time on Reel Talk, things got tense when Captains TJ Ott and Tyler McLaughlin sat down for the live 30-minute Wicked Tuna web-based after show.
On the latest installment of Reel Talk, Wicked Tuna’s newest captain TJ faced off against his former pupil, Tyler, who captained the top boat in the fleet last season. Host Mike Salk wastes no time with pleasantries, and Tyler is immediately confronted with questions of the captains’ shared past, and Tyler’s decision to “steal” TJ’s fishing coordinates. With candor, Tyler explains his decision, and Salk agrees that it only seems like a logical career progression for a talented young deckhand to one day go off to captain his own boat. After all, Salk points out, TJ doesn’t own the ocean. In the webisode, we see a humble side of Tyler, who even pays TJ a compliment while discussing the many times he saved their crew on rough waters.
It seems that Tyler has a little more explaining to do this week, as host Mike Salk highlights yet another controversial issue: Tyler ditching Marciano at Georges Bank. Tyler is once again on the defense, but takes it as a chance to explain why this kind of career is so different. When your livelihood is on the line–sometimes you have to make decisions that your heart may later regret. Leaving Marciano wasn’t something he wanted to do, but rather something he needed to do–and with the knowledge that there were plenty of boats nearby to help his ally–boats without a fish on the line. Tyler further describes the struggles he’s faced this season, and how in that moment, keeping the fish from spoiling was his top priority.
What did you think of the webisode? It’s a nice change of pace to see these captains duke it out on dry land. In case you missed it, check out episode two of Reel Talk and be sure to join us online this Sunday at 10 p.m. for the next webisode, immediately following Wicked Tuna.
Tune in to the next installment of Reel Talk, Sunday May 18, at 10P ET, right after the show! The captains will take your questions LIVE in studio with host Mike Salk. Just ask away on Facebook.com/WickedTunaTV or on Twitter using #ReelTalk.
