To transport viewers across the galaxy, the filmmakers behind COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey went on a quest around the world, searching for the best locations to film COSMOS’ stunning scenes. Go behind the scenes of COSMOS with a new video that tells the story of how the series was made.
The COSMOS crew shot the series in locations around the world for 70 days, from locations across Europe and North America to other ends of the globe. For Neil deGrasse Tyson, his favorite filming location was Iceland. “Here’s this dot on a map, and then we go there, and it’s like, ‘Whoa.’ This place is not of this Earth,” he says. “It is a living, volcanic place, and so it provided an extraordinary backdrop for imagining what Earth may have looked like when it was young.”
For executive producer Ann Druyan, the most meaningful location was the cliffs of Monterey, California, in the exact spot where the original COSMOS with Carl Sagan was filmed. “It was very poignant for me to stand there and watch Neil begin the new adventure of COSMOS,” she said. On the scenic crests of Monterey, a torch was passed from one generation of space explorers to another.
