Happy Earth Day, earth-dweller! Perhaps nobody celebrates the planet we call home better than Neil deGrasse Tyson, whose hosting duties on COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey double as an excuse for him to geek out over nature.
In honor of Earth Day, we’re going on a virtual nature walk with Tyson, exploring the most unique and beautiful parts of our world in animated form.
Did you know? COSMOS opens and closes with a symbolic shot of Tyson standing on the stunning cliffs of Monterey, California, a tribute to the original COSMOS series when Carl Sagan filmed in the very same spot.
When Tyson explored the Grand Canyon, he didn’t just hike the canyon to examine its ancient layers – he separated them.
One of the most scenic spots COSMOS visited was London’s Kew Gardens. Notorious for its gloomy weather, the sun came out just in time for the crew to film in the historic London gardens, where they filmed weeks’ worth of nature footage in the single day of sun.
COSMOS also filmed in Iceland, with the terrain’s unique landscapes providing insights into what Earth’s terrain may have looked like in prehistoric times.
Because after all, we are united on Earth in our humanity, bound by the molecules that form all human life. In the immortal words of Carl Sagan, “We are made of star stuff.”
Don’t miss the next COSMOS on Monday at 9P.
