Giglio Porto, Italy: The Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia partially sank on 13 January 2012 after hitting a reef off the Italian coast and running aground at Isola del Giglio, Tuscany.

Get ready for the premiere of the first U.S. documentary detailing the cruise ship disaster in a moment-by-moment account, told primarily through the eyes of those who experienced it. We will weave together in-depth stories from passengers and staff on board as well as Coast Guard rescuers with stunning home video (some never before seen on U.S. television) and CGI to reconstruct the sinking of the Costa Concordia as it happened.

Italian Cruise Ship Disaster: The Untold Stories outlines the chaos of the day, including the passengers’ calls to the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard’s calls to the ship, the ship’s response that there was a blackout but that it was under control, and the continued announcements that everything was fine. Nearly one hour after the impact, the captain calls an emergency on board.

Hear the panicked stories as passengers and crew describe the scramble to get on to the last remaining lifeboats, jumping off and swimming frantically to shore, those waiting for helicopter rescue, the Coast Guard’s search for survivors, and the outrage over the captain’s abandoning ship.

In this preview clip, there are no more deployable life rafts after the abandon ship announcement and the Captain has fled his sinking ship leaving passengers and crew to figure out how to escape their watery fate.

    i just watched the story about the Costa Concordia on The Discovery Channel. It’s a real shame that NATGO rushed their story about the sinking of the Costa Concordia just to get on air before The Discovery Channel. It really showed. Discovery Channel kicked your butts. NATGo should be ashamed of themselves and WHOEVER made decision to air it so quickly should be FIRED!

    Sorry you didn’t like the show, Frank- but we didn’t rush it to get it on before Discovery Channel. We rushed it because we had the information and needed to react while the people were looking for more information and stories from the disaster. This was a human tragedy, not a competition with Discovery Channel. Personally, I thought both of them were well done and produced from different points of view. Was there something specific you didn’t like about National Geographic’s program that we can think about for the future?
