Before you first traveled to Peru, were you aware of country’s penalties for drug trafficking?
No I was not.
You were told that the waistcoat had a kilogram of cocaine. When the drugs were weighed by customs officials, was that the actual amount?
The actual amount recorded was slightly less than 1 Kg.
After the set-up, did you ever hear from the drug dealers again?
What was the worst thing you saw while locked up abroad?
[An inmate performing sexual favors] for a pack of ‘pasta’ valued at 1 Sol (about 37 cents U.S.).
Did you make any friends while in Huaral Prison?
You don’t have friends in prison, even amongst ones fellow countrymen, it really is everyone for himself – dog eats dog.
In addition to your son, what did you miss most while you were in prison?
Stimulation of any form.
What was your first few weeks out of prison like?
Frightening – one becomes accustomed to the sense of ‘security’ that being in prison tends to impart after a while and being released is like entering a forgotten world.
