The American Kennel Club recently announced its list of most popular dog breeds of 2009. Six new breeds were recognized last year, increasing the total number of AKC-recognized canine breeds to 164.
The Labrador Retriever held fast her title as “Most Popular” – a ranking she’s enjoyed since 1999 – while the loyal German Shepherd moved up one notch to second place.
Bulldogs are becoming an increasingly well-liked dog breed, jumping from 21st place to 7th in just one decade, while the Dachshund and Pomeranian each dropped a spot. And which pooch received the unfortunate title of least popular of all dog breeds last year? The English Foxhound.
Here’s the round up of America’s top ten favorite breeds:
1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd
3. Yorkshire Terrier
4. Golden Retriever
